What is dyslexia ?
A simple definition of dyslexia would be that it is a long term difficulty in dealing
with the written language, either in reading or writing, in a person of average or above
average intelligence.
This “difficulty in dealing with the written language” does not deal with the origin of
the problem which can vary from one client to the other. As dyslexia can be more or less
severe, each dyslexic is different and copes with it according to his or her capacities.
What are symptoms of dyslexia ?
Among other manifestations, a dyslexic person, child or adult, might:
- skip words, or whole lines, confuse letters
- not understand (at all or in part) what they have read or even heard
- make a lot of spelling or usage mistakes
- have difficulty with elocution (dysphasia)
- not remember what they have spent hours trying to learn
- have trouble with numbers (dyscalculia)
- complain of frequent headaches, nausea or dizziness when reading or writing
but also:
- be inventive, and imaginative
- be particularly gifted in one or more of the arts
- excel in one or more sports
- excel in handicrafts, mechanics, engineering
